James W. Tysinger, MD
Past Chairman, Founder Dr. James "Bud" Tysinger founded IVV in 1994 after working as an ophthalmologist on missions to Sierra Leone for nearly 20 years. He has traveled to Zambia on missions since 1995, helping to build the Zimba Eye Hospital and guesthouse. He served as IVV's chairman until 2016. Read more about Dr. Tysinger Yenjean S. Hwang, MD
Chairman Dr. Yenjean Hwang is an infectious disease specialist in private practice in San Francisco’s East Bay area. She joined IVV after her husband Dr. Ivan Hwang started working at the California Eye Clinic, Dr. Tysinger’s former practice, and became involved with the organization. She looks forward to continuing Tysinger’s legacy of providing quality eye care in Zambia. Sue Wallace, MD
Board Member Dr. Sue Wallace is an ophthalmologist from British Columbia who went on her first mission to Zambia in 2007. For the past 10 years, she has led missions from Canada about every six months. She serves as a board member for IVV Canada as well. Kristen Plate, RN

Roger F. Carlson, MD
Vice Chairman Dr. Roger Carlson has traveled to Zambia on medical missions several times with his wife Martha, an RN. His Ophthalmology practice is located in Vallejo, California, and he has served on the board of IVV since the early 2000’s. He enjoys traveling and spending time with his grandchildren in his spare time. Gordon Gravelle
Founder, CFO Gordon Gravelle has accompanied Dr. Tysinger on several missions to Zambia and was closely involved in building the eye clinic and guesthouse for eye camp volunteers. On top of IVV, he is active in Rotary International and other volunteer organizations. Before working with IVV, he played in the NFL, winning two Super Bowl rings with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Secretary of the Board Reverend Winford Horsley has served as an IVV board member since 1991. He works as a hospital chaplain at the Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in Berkeley, California, and as a minister at Love Center Ministries in Oakland. He previously worked as a medical surgical manager at Alcon for 26 years. Thomas Brumley, MD
Co-founder Dr. Thomas Brumley is an ophthalmologist in Napa, California, and Findlay, Ohio. He previously served as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Coast Guard, stationed in St. Petersburg, Florida. He attended Ohio State University for medical school and did his residency at the UCLA Jules Stein Eye Institute. |
Robert S. Grosserode, MD
Board Member, Founder Dr. Robert S. Grosserode is an ophthalmologist at the California Eye Clinic’s Antioch and Brentwood locations. He has participated in many IVV missions to Zambia since his first trip with Dr. Tysinger to Haiti in 1996. His wife and three children have also volunteered at IVV’s Zambia eye camps. Jeffrey P. Board Member Dr. P. Jeffrey Colquhoun is a staff ophthalmologist with Southwest Michigan Eye Center in Battle Creek, Michigan, and is also on the teaching staff at Western Medical School. He has directed over 12 eye mission projects to Zambia, organizing the shipment of several containers of medical equipment -- including one with 55 donated bicycles -- to Zimba. His wife Diane and three children have also volunteered at the Zimba eye clinic. Ivan P. Hwang, MD
Board Member Dr. Ivan Hwang practices ophthalmology and oculoplastics in San Francisco’s East Bay area. He began attending IVV missions to Zambia in 2015 with Dr. Tysinger after joining the California Eye Clinic as Tysinger was retiring. Lina Lee
Board Member Lina has been in the financial services industry for 12 years, with experience in corporate strategy, business management and compliance. She currently lives in the Bay Area where she enjoys spending time with her husband and three children. Doug Buxton, MD
Physician Dr. Doug Buxton is the medical director and a cornea and refractive surgeon at Buxton Eye Surgical Group in New York City who works at eye camps yearly in Zambia. He holds academic and clinical posts at several medical institutions, including the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mt. Sinai and New York Medical College. He also serves as president of the Jorge N. Buxton, MD Microsurgical Education Foundation, which promotes the instruction of advanced microsurgical techniques and supports the Zambia missions. Physician Dr. Mark Cichowski has volunteered and worked at eye hospitals in Zambia and elsewhere since 1993 with his wife Jan. After attending the University of Michigan, he established a private practice in 1983 at Whidbey Eye Center in Coupeville, Washington. Carol Kollartis, MD
Physician Dr. Carol Kollarits is the medical director at the Eye Institute of Northwestern Ohio and an ophthalmologist at the Ophthalmology Associates of Northwestern Ohio. She attended Ohio State University's medical school, where she also did her residency. |
Malcom Orr, MD
Physician Dr. Malcolm Orr works at eye camps in Zambia with his wife, Dr. Mary Lindsay. He focuses on cornea and external disease at the private practice he established more than 30 years ago in Victoria, British Columbia. Peter Huang, MD
Physician Dr. Peter Huang is an ophthalmologist and a clinical professor at the University of Calgary. He has taught and performed cataract surgeries on numerous missions, often accompanied by his children, Katie and Stephen. Physician Dr. Mary Lindsay attends missions to Zambia with her husband, Dr. Malcolm Orr. Before she retired, she served as a general practitioner in oncology at the Cancer Clinic of British Columbia. Libby Cornock
Physician Dr. Libby Cornock has participated in missions to Zambia through IVV Canada in 2012, 2013 and 2016. Previously, she volunteered at the Lusaka Eye Hospital in Zambia with the Colin B. Glassco Foundation, which works to alleviate problems children face around the world, and in the Philippines. She is semi-retired from her ophthalmology practice in Comox, British Columbia. |

Jan Cichowski, RN
Eye Camp Volunteer Jan Cichowski has embarked on many missions to underserved countries, including Zambia, with her husband Dr. Mark Cichowski. She works in pre-operation and post-operation settings, in addition to the operating room, during missions. She attended Calvin College and trained at Blodgett Hospital, and she spent her high school years in Nigeria at a mission hospital. |
Terri Grosserode
Eye Camp Volunteer Terri Grosserode has accompanied her husband Dr. Robert Grosserode on numerous missions to Zambia since the founding of IVV. She helps in the operating room, clinic and wherever extra hands are needed at eye camps. The Grosserodes' three children also volunteer on these trips. |
